Venice - Day 5

Posted by , 9 September 2013

Our last day in Venice, and it feels like we saved the best for last.

On our last day in Venice, I really wanted to see San Giorgio. Having been there now, I’m really glad that we left it for last.

San Giorgio Maggiore

San Giorgio Maggiore is the small island directly across from San Marco that we had seen from the top of the Campanile.

The first thing that impressed me was that, unlike so many other Roman Catholic churches – and especially the Basilica – the church is bright and airy. And they even allow you to tale photos inside! But the real bonus is taking the ride to the top of the tower here. Unlike the Campanile at San Marco, this one has less tourists so you get plenty of time to just enjoy the view. You also get a really great view of the Doges Palace, St Mark’s Basilica and the water front next to them.

While we were up there, we watched an absolutely massive cruise ship traverse the length of the canal in front of us. While I bet the passengers had a really good view, it really seemed a travesty for such a temple to modern culture to almost completely blot out the views of Venice.

After a bit of shopping, we headed back to Mestre to collect our luggage and get the bus back to the airport.
