Amiens

A break from the battlefield tours to see a sound and light show at Amiens Cathedral.

Although Amiens was part of the frontline during World War One, we came to see the sound and light show at the Cathedral.

By the time we arrived, it was almost too late to actually see inside the Cathedral. We dropped the girls off and drove the same loop several times looking for a park. In the end, we had around 20 minutes to quickly see the inside. And then we settled into a coffee shop for the wait until dark.

In terms of the light show itself, once you’ve seen Enlighten in Canberra then you will have seen a better show. That’s not to say that the designers didn’t do a great job. I was really impressed with how they picked out all of the detail on the facade of the Cathedral so well, so that what was a plain stone building was transformed with coloured figures and each detailed sharply outlined. There were also some sections where the facade because the night sky with clouds moving across it. It’s just that it’s a single building, unlike Enlighten which gives the opportunity to walk around and see multiple buildings.

The sound show was all in French of course. We did our best to follow along – as far as we can tell it was a story about the history of the building – but we didn’t really understand the full story.

The more we spend time at these sorts of events, the more we have come to appreciate them as opportunities for communities to come together and to feature some of the public buildings around. To often I feel that we spend time locked away inside rather than outdoors (regardless of the weather!) with other people.

After the show was over, we had dinner by the Somme in a lively area with a range of restaurants. We even moved on for dessert and tried out something different.
