Moving house

Moving house is less effort than I expected. It helps when you’re only moving 7kms away.

Today is the day we move house.

Whenever I’ve looked around at all of the stuff we have collected over the years, I’ve always said that I don’t want to move – just confronting it all seems overwhelming. Luckily, being away for a few years means we have less attachment to our stuff and less stuff to shift, and also Juliane has been good at culling in the lead up to this day. And she had also been good at steadily working throughout the evenings to pack everything into boxes (with minimal assistance from me – my clothes still weren’t packed on the morning of the move!).

So off we went in the morning to pick up a truck to transport everything. The truck was a larger model than I was expecting, but that was probably a good thing – it was reasonably full by the time we had everything loaded up and it meant we move everything in one go. There wasn’t much furniture to move – the bed and side tables, the dining table and the TV were all of the large items. But then there were dozens of boxes to move.

Of course, the good thing about moving only 7kms away is the knowledge is that it’s a quick trip if we’ve forgotten anything.

So what’s left? The shed has my gardening tools but I know I won’t be needing them in Greenway. The garage still has the camping equipment but when the Cub Camper arrives we won’t be needing that either. There’s the BBQ, but it’s too big to take. But we do have a lot of the kids’ stuff tucked away in the roof.

The other good thing about effectively downsizing before moving into a new place is that it feels uncluttered. The rooms are effectively a blank slate, so we can go and create any look we want. The table and bed are light-coloured so they’ll fit in with whatever we choose to do to the rooms.

Now we have the basics – somewhere to sleep, somewhere to sit and eat.
