Review: Skoda Yeti

Posted by , 19 April 2015

A review of the Skoda Yeti after two days driving through France and Switzerland.

We hired the Skoda Yeti for our weekend of driving to Perouges and Lyon, and then through the Jura.

Driving

The Yeti is noticeable smaller car than others I have driven. This means it’s a lot easier to get around in city streets, and with the rear wheels practically at the back corners parking is a lot easier. Vision is good all round – the wide B-pillar looks a bit ugly on the outside but doesn’t restrict your vision.

Despite being smaller and taller, I didn’t really feel any pitching or sideways motion. Believe me, during the drive through the mountains I pushed it fairly hard with the DSG gearbox in manual mode. Possibly the all-wheel drive system helped it to stay in contact with the road.

And as always I love the DSG gearbox. It’s the perfect blend – allows you to be lazy, but when you want to change gears manually to cope with the road or just for some fun, you straight away have a responsive manual gearbox at your fingertips.

Interior controls

Having owned a Skoda for three years, I instantly felt at home in the Yeti. The controls, layout and materials are very similar, so similar that my fingers were instantly reaching for the paddle shifts (which weren’t there).

The nice thing about the Skoda interiors is that they are dark and uncluttered. It means you concentrate far more on the outside world, there are fewer distractions, the controls are close to hand and it’s a more relaxing environment for night driving.

Comfort

As with all cars, the seat is jacked up all of the way as soon as I get in the car. The Yeti is a noticeably more upright car, and it feels that way from the driver’s seat – more like you’re sitting in a proper seat than reclining on a lounge. Personally I find this a more comfortable posture, particularly for long distances. It also makes it easier to get in and out of the car, as you tend to slide sideways to ground level rather than climbing in and out.

The seats were firm but without some of the side bolstering I was used to in the Octavia RS.
