Bike ride to Divonne

Posted by , 27 October 2014

Another bike ride, this time over the border to France.

Today was a bit cooler than our last bike ride to Cully but we decided to use the services of Publibike again.

This time, we picked up our bikes in Nyon. As there is no formal outlet here, just the bikes stored in their special racks, we printed out a voucher which you take to the ticket office in the train station to exchange for the swipe cards. They even give you a post-paid envelope to use to return the cards.

From there, we set off up the hill out of Nyon in the direction of Divonne. It’s not far before you leave the suburbs of Nyon and can ride in the open country. There are a few bike paths but mostly it’s riding on the side of the road with a few small villages on the way.

We arrived in Divonne as the markets were still in full swing. The great thing about arriving by bike is that we could ride almost into the middle of town, lock our bikes up and start exploring. It’s a real mix here – fresh foods, cheeses, wines, clothing, household goods, toys and then the general crap. It covers the main street but then extends into the streets on either side like spines.

After that, we rode down to the local lake which was a bit desolate – it’s probably packed in the summer – and had lunch at the equally desolate kid’s ‘fun’ park. And then headed back to Nyon again.

It’s probably a 20 kilometre round trip but, as we always find on the bikes, when you ride through the countryside with new sights all around you the kilometres pass by unnoticed.
