A zombie movie with a twist – a zombie kangaroo!

Waterborne was a short film before the main feature – Me and My Mates vs The Zombie Apocalypse.

After a while, we all think we now what a zombie film will be like – a lone survivor or group of survivors battling against hordes of zombies to find their way to safety. Waterborne takes a completely different approach and with the shorter format it has to. So instead, it focuses on a single zombie attack with a twist – a zombie kangaroo!

I won’t give the story away – the film is available online for everyone to see – so let me just say that the film has amazing production values, even better than the main feature. The plot builds tension starting from a initial sense that something is wrong through to the zombie attack, the relief at having survived followed by an even bigger climax. The music perfectly supports this, only slightly telegraphing the impending doom. The acting and dialogue is laid back but tight, reflecting a very Australian approach. And the camera work really brings out the colours of the Australian bush.

it’s a long time since I’ve seen a genuine short before a feature film. Waterborne shows how the format can be a really effective story telling medium.
